Titles Are Difficult – As I was posting this image early today I came up against a real challenge – “What title would be appropriate?”. I post my Image of the Day both here and on another site (http://frymanfoto.com/daily.php). I try to include at least a short title in each location as well as a title for the photo which replaces the file name. To understand the challenge presented by this photo a little background is necessary. I was at […]

Hot Air Balloon Photo, Sno-Bird, posted 2012-08-30
Sno-Bird AKA Waddles – Even the hot air balloons are getting into photography. This balloon has gone through a couple of evolutions as can be noted by the multiple names but in its 2010 iteration it was into photography. Instead of a 35 mm camera, this camera would probably fall somewhere between 35 inches and 35 feet — just guessing I would say its probably about 10 feet across the film plane. As I post this photo, I also wanted to […]

Flower, Missouri Botanical Garden, posted 2012-08-29
Summer Color – A late blooming flowers (iris?) at the Missouri Botanical Garden this summer. Even now there are still blooms in the Garden, many of these are on trees and bushes, others are on late season annuals. This flower was in the area of the Garden populated with mostly irises. By the time this shot was taken, most of the other irises had lost their blooms or the blooms had started wilting and falling away. This colorful flower remained, […]

Speedy – Wildlife comes in all sizes. Like his relative in the child’s story, this guy may not be the fastest but with persistence he will soon be across this road and closer to his destination at a nearby pond. Most trips to the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles County have produced a few shots of ducks and geese but little else. Seeing this guy and having him pose long enough for a couple of photos […]

Hot Air Balloon Inflation, posted 2012-08-27
Balloons – As autumn approaches I always look forward to the ballooning season. This photo shows one of the more picturesque portions of any balloon event – inflating the balloon and heating up the air inside. One of my favorite trips, although I don’t get to go as often as I would like, is to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This roughly ten day event is filled with different ballooning related activities, morning and evening. Most days begin with the […]

Sculpture Photo, posted 2012-08-26
Foggy Morning – A foggy morning earlier this year at the Missouri Botanical Garden. These sculptures are located along the Central Axis of the Garden mid-way between the Climatron and the Spink Pavilion. They stand on tall columns in the center, and smallest, of three reflecting pools. This summer they were joined in the Central Axis by the large Porcelain Dragons that were here as part of the Garden’s Lantern Festival but now they have returned to their role as the […]

Lantern Festival Photo, Cherry Blossoms, posted 2012-08-25
Cherry Blossom – The Lantern Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden wrapped up last weekend and, according to their web site, all of the displays have now been removed. Garden members and visitors have the opportunity this weekend to purchase a variety of components of the displays while other items will be recycled or reused elsewhere in the Garden or in the city. Other than a few of my favorite Lantern Festival images that I will post one week in […]

Rabbit Photo, posted 2012-08-24
Urban Wildlife – Most trips to the Missouri Botanical Garden are focused on the flowers, trees, and other plants that the Garden offers. These plants offer a variety of colors, shapes, and photographic opportunities throughout most of the spring and summer. In the fall, you typically have a wide range of browns, golds, and reds as the annuals die off for a year and the deciduous trees shed their leaves until the following spring. The winter offers an opportunity for […]

Butterfly Photo, posted 2012-08-23
Why Did I Post This Image? – In posting this image and explaining why, I am probably going to show my ignorance when it comes to the world of butterflies, and insects and amphibians and many other areas. I probably won’t be using terms that are technically correct and I definitely won’t be moving into the world of genus and species or even common names for either the butterfly or the plant where it has lit. Instead, I’m going to spend a […]

Lantern Festival Photo, Jiang Tai Gong, posted 2012-08-22
Jiang Tai Gong Fishing – This is one of the many Lantern Festival displays at the Missouri Botanical Garden this summer. Unfortunately, the Festival closed last weekend and the only way to see these colorful silk and metal oversized lanterns now is in photos. According to the brochure distributed by the Garden, “Jiang Tai Gong was an expert in military affairs and hoped that one day he could help overthrow the evil Shang ruler. He waited patiently, fishing with no […]
