    On the soutwest shore of the lake in the Japanese Garden area of the Missouri Botanical Garden is a zig-zag bridge called Yatsuhashi, a name meaning “eight bridges” and referring to a place in Mikiwa Province, Japan, where in the 10th century a single river branched into eight channels.  The bridge was closed today because it was covered with snow but this offered an unusual photo opportunity.

    Robins standing guard at the base of a sculpture. Actually the sculpture was sitting near one of the few areas of open water at the Missouri Botanical Garden a few weeks ago. The robins would land on the base or on a nearby wall and wait their turn to drop down to the edge of the ice and get a drink.       Went back into my photo archives and pulled out these images of the icy landscape near Pere Marquette Park from 1/14/2007.  Hopefully we won’t get this much ice tomorrow.  Interestingly back in 2007 while the trees, grass, and almost everything else was covered with a nice layer of ice, the roads were actually in good shape.

    About a month ago we had some really cold weather and one of the small fountains at the Missouri Botanical Garden continued to drip.  The result was this small branch being embedded in ice.  If the weather forecasters are correct then we may see even more ice than this tomorrow but that remains to be seen.
