Whether you call them switch stands, switch throws, or something else, these devices for selecting a route where two tracks diverged came in a variety of sizes and shapes. Sometimes a railroad standardized on one shape, or maybe two, while on other railroads you might see several different types. The Museum of Transportation in St. Louis has a variety in their yard including the three types shown here.

Last night I posted a photo of the sky filled with geese from January 2012. Tonight’s image is from the same series. The geese would land in farm fields, feed for several minutes and then, as if some signal was given, all lift off within a matter of a few seconds, circle for a while and then land in the same or another field and repeat the process. Walking toward the Arch. This photo was taken as part of a repetition “theme” shoot. While the fence makes it work for that theme, it could as easily work for a leading lines theme, a landmark theme, or just as a standalone image of the downtown St. Louis area.
