Old shutter-covered door in Ste. Genevieve, MO.  What history does it hold?  Since the steps below the door seem to be long departed, one assumes the door is no longer used.  The use of shutters over a door seems unusual for a Midwest building but perhaps they were used to allow cross-ventilation while keeping out the direct light and heat from the sun.  The windows in the building had similar shutters although they were not as tall.  The opening in the foundation is also difficult to explain.  Were it located to either side one might think that it was for dumping coal into the basement for heating but the location behind what should be steps makes this questionable.
