  • Stein Pyramid, posted 2013-09-28

    This pyramid of plastic beer steins was a really attractive subject at the St. Charles Oktoberfest this morning.  It proved to be much more challenging than I expected.  The multiple clear (or mostly clear) objects made focus difficult and the way the bright sunlight lit the steins made exposure equally difficult.  Photoshop definitely helped with this one.  This and other Oktoberfest images, including a few nature shots, can be found at http://frymanfoto.smugmug.com/More–Things/Oktoberfest-St-Charles.

  • Lion and Keg, posted 2013-09-28

    I was at the St. Charles Oktoberfest this morning and this lion resting on a large wooden beer keg caught my eye.  While he is a pretty beast, it seemed strange to see him there.  He was resting outside the Hofbrau beer tent (he later moved but I couldn’t find him or his keg again).  I thought this was unusual since in Germany the lion is associated with Lowenbrau which is a direct competitor to Hofbrau.  Perhaps he is defecting […]
